Yearly sales thresholds tied to subscription tier mean stores can auto-upgrade as revenue grows, incurring unexpected costs. The free theme selection is limited (though many premium themes are available for purchase, and the large BigCommerce ecosystem supports developers who can design and code custom Stencil or Catalyst themes).

Pros
A hosted, SaaS platform ideal for merchants who aren't technically savvy. The website builder is easy to use, even without coding experience. Compatible with a wide range of free themes and integrates with countless apps and third-party tools. 24/7 support, robust marketing and inventory management, and a huge ecosystem of developers, designers, and digital marketers. Even as a templated SaaS platform, basic customizations are relatively easy through the editor, and most themes are designed to be editing-friendly.
Cons
Shopify charges transaction fees on plans below Shopify Payments. The native blog is lacking in content marketing functionality — inflexible layouts, an outdated editor, and no native option to create blog categories. Migration off Shopify is not straightforward — exports are CSV-based, so it is best handled by eCommerce migration professionals. Apps and paid themes — while abundant — can be pricey at scale.
Magento
Pros
As an open-source eCommerce platform, Magento (Adobe Commerce) is effectively limitless in the scope of customizations possible — you're limited by your development capacity, not the platform. Its open-source nature also enables excellent omnichannel capabilities. A large global developer community (hundreds of thousands) means help is available.
