In 2026, both Shopify Plus B2B Edition and BigCommerce B2B Edition can run serious B2B commerce. The decision between them comes down to four factors: catalog complexity, customer-group complexity, the integration matrix, and the design system.
Two things about this post up front. First, we are a Shopify Plus Partner and a BigCommerce Elite Partner. Our credibility on this comparison depends on not picking a side. We do not get paid more by either platform, and we have shipped real B2B work on both. Second, the 2026 picture is meaningfully different from the 2024 picture. Shopify Plus B2B Edition has matured. BigCommerce B2B Edition (powered by what was BundleB2B) has matured. The decision is no longer "one is for SMB and one is for enterprise." It is a question of operational fit.
Here is how we walk merchants through it.
The Honest Summary
Both platforms can run real B2B commerce in 2026. The decision usually breaks down to four factors: catalog complexity, customer-group complexity, the integration matrix, and the design system. Neither platform wins on all four for every merchant. The longer treatment is at our Shopify vs BigCommerce cornerstone, and the B2B-specific deep dive is at BigCommerce vs Shopify for B2B. This post focuses on what has changed in 2026.
What Has Changed in 2026?
Shopify Plus B2B Edition Has Closed Most of the Old Gaps
Two years ago, "Shopify is for D2C, BigCommerce is for B2B" was a defensible shorthand. It is not defensible in 2026. Shopify Plus B2B Edition now natively supports:
- Company profiles with multiple locations. Each location can have its own catalog access, price list, and payment terms.
- Price lists per company or per location. Tiered pricing, contract pricing, and volume-break pricing all work through B2B price lists rather than apps or workarounds.
- Net payment terms with order approval workflows. Buyers can place orders on net-30, net-60, or custom terms, and orders can route through approval before hitting fulfillment.
- Quote workflows. Buyers can request quotes; sales reps can adjust pricing and convert quotes to draft orders.
- A B2B storefront separate from the D2C storefront. Same Shopify Plus instance, two distinct experiences.
Where Shopify Plus B2B still asks for compromise: highly bespoke buyer-portal workflows (custom approval chains beyond what Shopify's built-in workflows support), some niche tax and regulatory scenarios, and very deep ERP integration patterns. Most are solvable with Shopify Functions and middleware, but they take engineering.
BigCommerce B2B Edition Is More Configurable Out of the Box
BigCommerce's B2B Edition, built on the BundleB2B acquisition and now natively integrated, takes a different posture. Where Shopify Plus B2B is opinionated and consistent, BigCommerce B2B is more configurable: buyer groups, custom catalogs per group, quote management, sales rep masquerade, custom shipping rules per buyer group, and a more extensive permission model.
The tradeoff: BigCommerce's storefront frontend, while improving with Catalyst, has not historically matched a well-built Shopify Plus theme on visual quality or performance. Merchants who lead with design ambition generally find Shopify's theme ecosystem and developer maturity stronger. Merchants who lead with operational complexity generally find BigCommerce's configuration depth more direct.
Both Platforms Have Improved Headless Stories
Shopify has Hydrogen (the React framework) and Oxygen (the hosting layer), with the Customer Account API and the Storefront API as the data layer. BigCommerce has Catalyst (the Next.js-based starter) and a more open headless posture. BigCommerce was headless-friendly before headless was fashionable.
For B2B specifically, the headless decision comes down to whether the buyer experience justifies the engineering investment. Most B2B operations do not need a headless storefront. The ones that do, typically merchants with very custom buyer portals, deep integration with proprietary tools, or a content-heavy commerce experience, find both platforms workable.
The Four Decision Factors
Factor 1: Catalog Complexity
How many SKUs? How deep are the variant trees? How many customer-specific catalogs? How much custom attribution per SKU?
Shopify Plus handles large catalogs well (we have run merchants past 100,000 SKUs) but has a hard cap of 100 variants per product and three option dimensions. For most B2B catalogs, this is a non-issue. For catalogs with deep configurability (industrial fasteners, technical components, configurable equipment), the variant cap is a real constraint, usually solved with product metafields and a configurator app, but it adds engineering complexity.
BigCommerce has a more flexible product model with no equivalent hard cap on variants (it supports up to 600 variants per product) and a more flexible custom field structure. For deep-catalog B2B merchants, this is a meaningful advantage.
Factor 2: Customer-Group Complexity
How many distinct customer segments? How different are their catalogs, prices, and rules?
Shopify Plus B2B Edition expresses customer-group complexity through Companies, Locations, Price Lists, and Catalogs. The model is opinionated: once you understand it, the workflows are clean. Once you outgrow it, the workarounds get complicated.
BigCommerce B2B Edition expresses customer-group complexity through Customer Groups and Custom Pricing combined with the B2B Edition's buyer-group features. The model is more granular and configurable, which is an advantage for merchants with non-standard customer-group requirements.
Factor 3: The Integration Matrix
ERP, OMS, PIM, 3PL, EDI, tax engine, payment processor, CRM, marketing automation. The right platform is often the one whose existing integration ecosystem covers the most of your matrix natively.
Shopify has the larger app ecosystem and a more mature middleware story. Shopify Functions, Shopify Flow, and the Storefront and Admin APIs are well-trafficked. For most off-the-shelf integration needs, there is a Shopify-native option.
BigCommerce has a smaller app ecosystem but a more open API posture. For bespoke ERP integration or merchants with internal engineering teams who want direct API access, BigCommerce often feels less constrained.
Factor 4: Design System and Frontend Performance
Brand-led commerce is still commerce. The frontend matters even in B2B.
Shopify has the more developed theme ecosystem, the larger pool of designers and developers familiar with Liquid and Hydrogen, and a stronger Core Web Vitals baseline out of the box. Our Shopify Plus agency practice ships on Shopify because the design surface is more developed.
BigCommerce has improved meaningfully with Catalyst and the modern Stencil theme architecture, but the design ecosystem is smaller. Our BigCommerce experts practice ships strong work on BigCommerce, but the design ecosystem is not the same size.

Shopify vs BigCommerce B2B FAQ
Which platform is cheaper for B2B?
On sticker price, BigCommerce Enterprise is typically lower than Shopify Plus at comparable volume. Total cost of ownership depends on apps, integrations, design work, and ongoing support. The platform license is rarely the dominant cost line for a serious B2B operation: engineering and operations dominate.
Which platform has better support for B2B merchants?
Both platforms offer 24/7 merchant support at the enterprise tier. The meaningful difference is in the partner and developer ecosystem. Shopify's ecosystem is larger, making qualified partners easier to find. BigCommerce's partner network is smaller but mature. For ongoing support beyond the platform's own offering, the right partner matters more than the platform. Our Shopify support and BigCommerce support retainers cover both. Larger BigCommerce projects also benefit from our BigCommerce migration services team during transition.
Can I migrate between Shopify Plus and BigCommerce later?
Yes. Both platforms have well-trodden migration paths in both directions. Our Shopify to BigCommerce migration and BigCommerce to Shopify Plus migration practices run these projects regularly. Migration is not free, but it is not a one-way door.
What about Adobe Commerce (Magento) for B2B?
Adobe Commerce remains a real B2B platform, especially for merchants with the engineering capacity to run an on-premises or PaaS instance. The maintenance and security burden is higher, the developer talent pool is shrinking, and the total cost of ownership is generally higher than Shopify Plus or BigCommerce. Our Magento enterprise and Shopify Plus vs Adobe Commerce writeups walk through that decision tree.
How do you decide which B2B platform is right for a specific merchant?
Our discovery process is a structured workshop. We map the catalog model, the customer-group model, the integration matrix, and the operational workflows, then run that model against both platforms to identify where each fits cleanly and where each requires workarounds. The recommendation comes out of the comparison, not out of a preference.
If You Are Evaluating B2B Platforms
The platform decision is a multi-year decision. The discovery work that informs it should not be rushed. Start a conversation with our team: we can walk through your specific B2B operation and produce an honest comparison that does not start from a sales preference.
