BigCommerce Migrations Without the SEO Cliff
Most failed BigCommerce migrations are failed redirect maps. URL structures change, canonicals drop, schema graphs break, and three months of organic traffic vanish before anyone runs a crawl. We do this differently: a written assessment, a field-level 301 plan deployed via BigCommerce Redirects, schema graph rebuild with consistent @id references, and 30+ days of post-launch monitoring across Google and AI engines. As a BigCommerce Elite Partner since 2012, we have escalation paths into BigCommerce when something platform-side gets in the way.
TL;DR
What a BigCommerce migration with us looks like
- ›Written assessment + scope before code
- ›Field-level 301 redirect map
- ›Products, customers, orders, subscriptions
- ›Stencil (Cornerstone / custom) or Catalyst rebuild
- ›Open Checkout customization or OPC tuning
- ›B2B Edition + Multi-Storefront if relevant
- ›Schema graph + AI-citation continuity
- ›30+ days post-launch hyper-care
The Migration Engagement
Eight Phases, Written Down
Every phase has a deliverable, an owner, and a definition of done. The scope is the contract.
Assessment & Scope
Feature parity audit, data schema mapping, full URL inventory, integration inventory (ERP / OMS / CRM / 3PL / email / loyalty), risk register, and a documented go-live runbook with rollback paths. Written scope, not a deck.
Data Migration
Products, variants, options, modifiers, assets, customers (with B2B Edition company hierarchies preserved), historical orders, reviews, taxes, subscriptions, custom fields → BigCommerce metafields, and B2B accounts mapped, transformed, and validated against parity reports before cutover.
URL Redirect Strategy
Field-level URL mapping from source schema to BigCommerce's URL structure (/products/handle, /categories/handle, /pages/handle, /blog/post-slug). 301 redirect map deployed via BigCommerce's Redirects + edge layer. Canonical preservation, sitemap regeneration, llms.txt carryover, and 30+ days of post-launch ranking monitoring.
Stencil or Catalyst Rebuild
Stencil themes (Cornerstone or fully custom — Handlebars + Stencil CLI + Theme Editor) for traditional storefronts, or Catalyst (BigCommerce's Next.js + GraphQL Storefront API framework) for headless. Built lean for Core Web Vitals, Page Builder enabled, content + commerce hybrid ready.
Open Checkout & B2B Edition
BigCommerce Open Checkout customization (full HTML / CSS / JS control via the Open Checkout SDK), Optimized One-Page Checkout configuration, and B2B Edition setup — Price Lists, Customer Groups, company hierarchies, quote management, and account portal customization.
SEO Continuity
Title / meta / canonical / OG tags carried over via BigCommerce custom fields and theme template, schema graphs (Product, Review, AggregateRating, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList) rebuilt with consistent @id references, internal-link parity, and AI-engine citation continuity (ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity Shop, Google AI Overviews, Amazon Rufus).
Apps, Integrations & QA
Klaviyo, Recharge / Rebillia, Yotpo, Searchspring / Klevu, Rebuy / Nosto, Gorgias, plus ERP / OMS / 3PL connectors reconnected and tested via BigCommerce's V2 / V3 / GraphQL APIs and webhooks. Checkout, search, PDP / PLP, payments, shipping, tax, CWV, analytics, and pixels verified.
Cutover & Hyper-Care
DNS cutover plan with rollback path, smoke tests on production, 30+ days of post-launch hyper-care (P1 < 1 hour response), and a documented handoff to your team or our BigCommerce support retainer.

The Anti-SEO-Cliff Checklist
Migration failures aren't data failures — they're SEO failures. We treat the URL map, schema graph, and AI-citation surface as one integrated workstream. After launch, hand off to our BigCommerce SEO bench for ongoing optimization.
- Full URL inventory from sitemap + Search Console + crawl
- Field-level 301 redirect map (source → BigCommerce)
- Canonical preservation via BC custom fields + theme
- Schema graph rebuild with consistent @id references
- OG image + Twitter card carryover via theme template
- llms.txt and AI-citation graph preserved
- Sitemap regeneration + Search Console resubmission
- 30+ days of ranking + AI-citation monitoring
- Internal link parity check against pre-migration crawl
- Multi-Storefront hreflang preservation if applicable

BigCommerce Migrations — Quick Answers
How long does a BigCommerce migration take?
Simple migrations (small catalogs, standard features) 4–6 weeks. Mid-complexity (mid-size catalog, some custom features, integrations) 8–12 weeks. Complex / enterprise (large catalogs, B2B Edition, Multi-Storefront, Catalyst headless, ERP integration) 16–24+ weeks. We give you a written timeline after the assessment phase.
Will SEO and rankings survive the move to BigCommerce?
Yes — when the redirect map is built right. We pull a full URL inventory from your sitemap, Search Console, and a crawl, build a field-level 301 redirect map deployed via BigCommerce Redirects + the edge layer, preserve canonicals via custom fields and theme template, rebuild schema graphs with consistent @id references, and monitor rankings for 30+ days post-launch.
Why migrate to BigCommerce instead of Shopify?
BigCommerce wins for: (1) open-source checkout (Open Checkout SDK gives full control vs. Shopify's Checkout Extensibility constraints), (2) richer native B2B (B2B Edition Price Lists + Customer Groups + company hierarchies feel less bolted-on than B2B on Shopify), (3) no transaction fees on non-BigPay payment methods, (4) Multi-Storefront for multi-brand without the expansion-store ceiling, (5) Catalyst (Next.js + GraphQL) for headless without committing to Hydrogen. We'll be honest if Shopify is the better fit.

BigCommerce Migration FAQ
Are you a BigCommerce Partner?
Yes — BigCommerce Elite Partner since 2012, the longest-tenured Elite Partner status in the network. Direct lines into BigCommerce's merchant success, launch, and engineering teams; access to beta features (early GraphQL Storefront API capabilities, Catalyst patterns, new Page Builder blocks).
Stencil or Catalyst — which storefront framework?
Stencil (Cornerstone or custom) is the right answer for most migrations — mature, Theme Editor / Page Builder support, fast time-to-market, and Liquid-equivalent templating with Handlebars. Catalyst (Next.js + GraphQL Storefront API) is right when you need (1) Core Web Vitals beyond Stencil's ceiling, (2) multi-channel content delivery from one backend, (3) headless CMS integration (Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok), or (4) maximum UX flexibility. We scope honestly.
What about historical orders and customer passwords?
All historical orders migrate — order status, line items, fulfillment, refunds, totals preserved (tagged 'migrated' for analytics segregation). Customer profiles migrate with order history; passwords cannot be migrated cleanly, so BigCommerce will trigger a one-time password-reset email on first login, communicated via a pre-launch email sequence so it doesn't surprise your customers.
How does B2B Edition work after migration?
B2B Edition gets configured in the same engagement — Price Lists (different prices for different customer groups), Customer Groups, company hierarchies (parent / child / sub-buyer), quote management, requisition lists, and the B2B account portal. We migrate B2B customers, price tiers, and company structures; quote history migrates where source data permits. For richer workflows we layer apps like BundleB2B (now native B2B Edition) or BSS B2B.
Multi-Storefront — when is it the right call?
Multi-Storefront is BigCommerce's native multi-brand / multi-region capability — one backend, multiple storefronts with channel-specific content, pricing, currency, and language. It's the right call when you have (1) multiple brands sharing inventory and order ops, (2) DTC + B2B as separate experiences, or (3) regional storefronts (US / EU / APAC) needing distinct content and tax. We migrate to Multi-Storefront in the same engagement when scoped.
What about subscriptions, gift cards, and loyalty?
Recharge or Rebillia for subscriptions (Stripe token continuity when source supports), native BigCommerce Gift Cards for code + balance migration via API, and Smile.io / LoyaltyLion / Yotpo Loyalty for loyalty point balances with import support. We field-map every balance and history record before cutover.
Can we keep our checkout custom?
Yes — BigCommerce's Open Checkout SDK gives full HTML / CSS / JavaScript control of the checkout (vs. Shopify's bounded Checkout Extensibility). We migrate any custom checkout logic (one-page upsells, custom fields, validation rules, A/B tests) into Open Checkout. For Optimized One-Page Checkout (standard) we tune configuration and styling. Either path keeps PCI scope minimal.
How is migration priced?
Migration scope is priced after the assessment phase — typically a fixed price per phase plus a small T&M envelope for surprises (every migration has at least one). We'll quote a band on the first call after a 30-minute scope conversation, and a written number after the assessment.
