Why a Specialist Matters
Most failed Shopify migrations are failed redirect maps. URL structures change, canonicals drop, schema graphs break, and three months of organic traffic vanish before anyone runs a crawl. We do this differently: a written assessment, a field-level 301 plan, schema graph rebuild with consistent @id references, and 30+ days of post-launch monitoring across Google and AI engines. As a Shopify Plus Partner we also have escalation paths into Shopify when something platform-side gets in the way.
TL;DR
The Migration Engagement
Every phase has a deliverable, an owner, and a definition of done. The scope is the contract.
Feature parity audit, data schema mapping, full URL inventory, integration inventory (ERP / OMS / CRM / 3PL / email / loyalty), risk register, and a documented go-live runbook with rollback paths. The deliverable is a written scope, not a vibe.
Products, variants, options, assets, customers (with hashed-password preservation where possible), historical orders, reviews, taxes, subscriptions (Recharge token-continuity, Shopify Subscriptions, Bold), and B2B accounts mapped, transformed, and validated against parity reports before cutover.
Field-level URL mapping from source schema to Shopify's URL structure (/products/handle, /collections/handle, /pages/handle, /blogs/blog-slug/article-handle). 301 redirect map deployed at Shopify's URL Redirects + edge layer. Canonical preservation, sitemap regeneration, llms.txt carryover, and 30+ days of post-launch ranking monitoring.
Online Store 2.0 themes (Dawn, Horizon, or fully custom) with sections everywhere, JSON templates, metaobjects + metafields, and app blocks — or Hydrogen on Oxygen for headless. Built lean for Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), not as a port of your old theme.
Checkout Extensibility (UI extensions, branded checkout, post-purchase pages) and Shopify Functions for discounts, shipping, payment customization, cart transform, fulfillment constraints, and order routing. Scripts and checkout.liquid are deprecated as of August 2025 — we ship the Functions equivalent.
Title / meta / canonical / OG tags carried over via Online Store 2.0 metafields, schema graphs (Product, Review, AggregateRating, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList) rebuilt with consistent @id references, internal-link parity, and AI-engine citation continuity (ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity Shop, Google AI Overviews, Amazon Rufus).
Klaviyo, Recharge, Yotpo / Judge.me / Okendo, Smile.io / LoyaltyLion, Klevu / Algolia / Searchspring, Nosto / Rebuy, Gorgias, plus ERP / OMS / 3PL connectors reconnected and tested. Checkout, search, PDP / PLP, payments, shipping, tax, CWV, analytics, and pixels verified before launch.
DNS cutover plan with rollback path, smoke tests on production, 30+ days of post-launch hyper-care (P1 < 1 hour response), and a documented handoff to your team or our Shopify support retainer.
Source Platforms
Patterns and pitfalls vary by source platform — we've got the playbook for each.
Magento / Adobe Commerce
Catalog, customer, order, B2B, custom modules
BigCommerce / Stencil / Catalyst
Open Checkout, B2B Edition, Multi-Storefront
WooCommerce + WordPress
WooSubscriptions → Recharge, ACF → metaobjects
Volusion (sunset)
/p/ → /products/ rewrites, gift card preservation
Salesforce Commerce Cloud
Demandware data extraction, OCAPI / SCAPI exports
Shopify → Shopify Plus
Plus upgrade with B2B / Markets / Functions enablement
Custom / homegrown stacks
Bespoke ETL from SQL / API / CSV exports
SEO Continuity
Most migration failures aren't data failures — they're SEO failures. We attack the URL map, schema graph, and AI-citation surface as a single integrated workstream, not an afterthought. Cross-link with our Shopify SEO bench for ongoing optimization after launch.
Migration Playbooks
Each migration path has its own data shape, redirect pattern, and feature-parity playbook.

Simple migrations (small catalogs, standard features, no custom checkout) 4–6 weeks. Mid-complexity (mid-size catalog, some custom features, integrations) 8–12 weeks. Complex / enterprise (large catalogs, B2B, custom Functions, headless Hydrogen, ERP integration) 16–24+ weeks. We give you a written timeline after the assessment phase.
Yes — when the redirect map is built right. We pull a full URL inventory from your sitemap, Search Console, and a crawl, build a field-level 301 redirect map, preserve canonicals via Online Store 2.0 metafields, rebuild schema graphs with consistent @id references, and monitor rankings for 30+ days post-launch. Most clients see traffic recover within 30 days; some see lift from the speed gains alone.
Shopify Plus adds Checkout Extensibility (custom checkout UX), Shopify Functions (server-side logic for discounts / shipping / payment / cart transform), B2B on Shopify (Catalogs, Company accounts, payment terms), Shopify Markets (multi-region + tax + currency), Shopify Flow automation, expansion stores (multi-storefront), higher API rate limits, dedicated success managers, and the Plus Partner network. Most mid-market+ migrations target Plus; we'll be honest about whether your volume justifies it.
Related Services
Yes. 1Digital® is a Shopify Plus Partner and Shopify Partner — direct access to Shopify's merchant success and launch teams during migration, escalation paths for platform-side issues, and access to beta features (early Functions APIs, new Markets behavior, Customer Account API previews).
All historical orders migrate, with order status, line items, fulfillment, refunds, and totals preserved (assigned to a 'migrated' tag for analytics segregation). Customer accounts migrate with profile data and order history. Passwords cannot be migrated cleanly — Shopify will trigger a one-time password-reset email on first login, which we communicate via a pre-launch email sequence so it doesn't surprise your customers.
For WooSubscriptions and Recharge sources, we preserve Stripe payment tokens so existing subscribers don't have to re-enter payment info. The destination is usually Recharge on Shopify (richest feature set), Shopify Subscriptions (native, simpler), or Bold Subscriptions (legacy installs). We map subscription cadence, next-charge date, and discount state field-by-field.
Gift card codes and outstanding balances migrate via Shopify's GiftCard API. Store credit becomes Shopify Store Credit (rolled out 2024) or a metafield-tracked balance with Smile.io / LoyaltyLion / Yotpo Loyalty as the front-end. Loyalty point balances and tier statuses migrate when the destination loyalty app supports import.
Yes. B2B on Shopify (native, Plus-only) supports Catalogs (price lists by company), Company accounts with multiple locations, payment terms / Net 30, draft orders for quotes, and a B2B-specific checkout. We migrate B2B customers, price tiers, company hierarchies, and order history. For richer quote-to-cash, we layer in apps like Sparklayer or BSS Commerce B2B; for native sufficiency, B2B on Shopify is the answer.
Yes. Hydrogen on Oxygen (Shopify's React framework on Shopify's edge) is the right target when (1) you need UX flexibility beyond Online Store 2.0, (2) you're serving multiple channels from one commerce backend, (3) you're combining Shopify with a headless CMS (Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok), or (4) you need CWV beyond what theme architecture can hit. We scope honestly — headless isn't right for every brand.
Shopify deprecated Scripts and checkout.liquid for all Plus merchants in August 2025. Functions and Checkout Extensibility replaced them across discounts, shipping, payment customization, cart transform, fulfillment constraints, and order routing. Every Plus migration we run is on the Functions / Checkout Extensibility stack from day one — no legacy debt shipped.
Migration scope is priced after the assessment phase — typically a fixed price per phase plus a small T&M envelope for surprises (every migration has at least one). We'll quote a band on the first call after a 30-minute scope conversation, and a written number after the assessment.
Tell us your current platform, your catalog size, and your launch window — we'll come back with a written scope and timeline.
