TL;DR — Share of model is a brand's share of an AI model's category mindshare: when users ask an engine for recommendations in a category, how often — and how favorably — the model names that brand relative to competitors. It is the AI-era analogue of share of voice, measured by running recommendation-style prompts across engines and scoring brand presence in the responses. Unlike citation share, which counts source citations, share of model captures unlinked, from-memory brand recall — the associations the model absorbed from training data and reinforces through grounding.
Definition & scope
Share of model moves slowly and compounds: it reflects the accumulated weight of mentions, reviews, and coverage a model has absorbed. That makes it a lagging indicator of brand-building work and a moat once established — competitors can't quickly talk a model out of its learned associations.
Tracked alongside citation share, it separates two different wins: being the cited source in a grounded answer (fast lever) versus being the brand the model volunteers unprompted (slow lever). A mature AI-visibility program measures and works both.
