TL;DR — Prompt visibility tracking is the practice of running a fixed, category-relevant panel of prompts across AI engines on a regular schedule and recording whether — and how — each engine's answers mention or cite a brand. It is the AI-era equivalent of rank tracking: same prompts, same engines, week over week, producing a comparable trendline instead of anecdotes. A tracked panel typically mixes commercial-intent prompts ("best [category] for [use case]"), comparative prompts ("[brand] vs [competitor]"), and informational ones, measured per engine because each engine retrieves differently.
Definition & scope
The output metric is citation share — the percentage of panel prompts on which an engine cites the brand — plus qualitative reads: what sources the engine leans on, how the brand is characterized, and which competitors co-occur.
Without tracking, AEO work is unfalsifiable; with it, each optimization push can be checked against the engines it was meant to move. Weekly cadence catches shifts inside a sprint without drowning in day-to-day noise.
