AI SEO Glossary
TL;DR — AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of structuring content — through answer-first copy, schema fidelity, and entity authority — so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite your brand inside their generated answers.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)is the practice of structuring content so AI engines surface and cite it when answering user queries. The output unit is citation — either your brand is named in the answer and linked, or it's paraphrased without credit, or it's ignored entirely.
AEO focuses on a specific signal set: answer-first paragraph structure (the directly extractable first 100-200 words), schema fidelity matched to visible content (FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Product), entity authority via Knowledge Graph and Wikidata linkages, named authorship with credentials, visible publication and update dates, and sourced claims. The work compounds with classic SEO — strong AEO signal moves both AI citation shareand classic Google ranking, because Google's helpful-content systems reward the same structural clarity.
Measured via prompt-panel citation tracking, Search Console AI impressions, and referral segments from AI domains. Full service detail on /aeo-services; compared with SEO and GEO on /aeo-vs-seo.
You'll see AEO in agency RFPs, vendor product copy, and AI-SEO industry analysis. Search Console added AI impressions and clicks to its standard Performance report in 2024 — that's the closest first-party signal of AEO performance Google offers. For engines beyond Google (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude), measurement requires prompt-panel monitoring; engine vendors don't expose first-party citation counts.
For content teams, AEO is the framework that justifies answer-first restructuring (lede paragraph carries the cite-bait), named author bylines with credentials, and aggressive FAQ-schema deployment. For technical teams, it's the brief that drives structured-data accuracy reviews and robots.txt allowlisting of GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot.
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. The practice of optimizing content so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) name and link your brand inside their generated answers.
SEO optimizes for ranking in the classic search results page. AEO optimizes for citation inside an AI-generated answer above (or instead of) those results. The signal sets overlap heavily — schema, content quality, entity authority — but AEO weights schema fidelity and answer-first structure more aggressively. See /aeo-vs-seo.
Some practitioners use them interchangeably. We treat GEO as the umbrella that includes AEO plus agentic-commerce and protocol work (MCP, AP2). AEO is the citation-focused core of GEO.
The primary KPI is citation share — the percentage of category-relevant prompts on which a given engine cites your brand. Tracked weekly across a defined prompt panel. Secondary signals: Search Console AI impressions, referral traffic from AI domains.
ChatGPT (and ChatGPT Search), Perplexity, Claude.ai, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Most engines now share the same underlying signal preferences, so good AEO work compounds across all of them.
Content audit and answer-first rewrites, FAQ and HowTo schema, named authorship with credentials, entity-graph linkages (Wikidata, LinkedIn, sameAs), structured data accuracy review, and citation-share monitoring. See /aeo-services for full scope.
