AI SEO Glossary
TL;DR — Google AI Overviews are Gemini-powered AI summaries that appear above the classic Google search results on a growing share of queries. Launched as Search Generative Experience (SGE) in May 2023, rebranded and rolled out as default at Google I/O May 2024.
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summary blocks that appear above the classic search results on a growing share of Google queries. They synthesize from multiple sources, cite those sources by URL and brand name, and link to the underlying pages. Powered by Gemini.
Timeline: launched as Search Generative Experience (SGE) at Google I/O in May 2023 (experimental, opt-in via Search Labs, US-only). Graduated and rebranded as AI Overviews at I/O 2024, rolled out to all US users without opt-in. Coverage has continued expanding internationally and into more commercial and YMYL query categories through 2025-2026. Search Console added AI impressions and clicks to the standard Performance report in 2024, integrated with classic web data. Full optimization detail on /google-ai-overviews-optimization.
At the top of the Google SERP for an increasing share of queries. Inside Search Console's Performance report (the AI-impressions segment). In any modern SEO audit deck — the “Are we in the Overviews?” question is now a standard slide.
Because Google AI Overviews use the same underlying signals as classic Google ranking (with a heavier weight on schema fidelity and answer-first structure), most of the AEO work that lifts ChatGPT and Perplexity citation also lifts AI Overviews citation. The catch: AI Overviews can compress click-through more than classic SERPs — the Overview answer often satisfies the query without a click.

Same product, two names. SGE was the experimental Labs flag; AI Overviews is the production feature. The underlying technology (Gemini-powered synthesis with citation) is the same.
Gemini. Google has used various Gemini model versions over time; the synthesis pattern (multi-source retrieve, summarize, cite by URL) has been consistent.
Yes. Each AI Overview links to the underlying URLs it synthesized from, with brand names visible in the citation cards. Search Console's Performance report now segments AI impressions and clicks separately from classic web — that's the first-party measurement Google offers.
Answer-first paragraph structure (the lede carries the cite-bait), schema fidelity (FAQ, HowTo, Article), entity authority, named authorship. Full scope on /google-ai-overviews-optimization. Most of the work overlaps with general AEO.
No. Coverage has expanded but is still selective by query category. Commercial queries, YMYL queries, and complex how-to queries are the most likely to trigger an Overview. Coverage continues expanding through 2026.
