What an AEO Audit Measures
An AEO audit is more than “ask ChatGPT and screenshot the result.” The diagnostic is structured around nine pillars, each tied to a signal AI engines actually use to decide who they cite.
01
Baseline measurement of how often — and in which contexts — your brand is named, quoted, or linked across ChatGPT (Search and Shopping), Perplexity (and Perplexity Shop), Google Gemini, Claude.ai, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Amazon Rufus, and Google's AI Overviews. Workspace, our proprietary in-house platform, runs this against a custom prompt corpus for your category and reports Share of Model the same way you'd track share of search.
02
We map 80–250 prompts across awareness ('best [category] for [use case]'), consideration ('[brand] vs [competitor]', 'is [brand] reliable'), and transactional ('where to buy [product]', '[product] reviews') intent. For each prompt: who gets cited, in what order, with what sentiment, and from which sources. The gap map shows where you're invisible vs where competitors dominate.
03
Is llms.txt published at the root? Does it surface your canonical entity, product taxonomy, FAQ corpus, and policy pages in the structured-summary format Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity engineers have signaled they'll prioritize? We audit presence, validity, content density, and competitor implementations.
04
robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, Bytespider, CCBot, and Cohere-AI. CDN-level (Cloudflare AI Audit, Fastly, Akamai) and origin-level deny-lists. Are you blocking the engines you want citing you?
05
Organization, Product, Offer, AggregateRating, Review, FAQ, HowTo, Article, BreadcrumbList, LocalBusiness — and category-specific schemas (JewelryStore, Restaurant, SportingGoodsStore). Completeness, validity, GTIN/MPN/brand coverage, and AI-engine extraction-readiness via Workspace and Google's Rich Results Test.
06
Does Google's Knowledge Graph have a node for your brand? Is sameAs wired correctly across LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata, X, and industry directories? Are AI engines conflating you with a similarly-named entity? Entity disambiguation is the difference between being cited as 'a leading retailer' and being cited by name.
07
AI engines prefer pages with extractable answers: question-style H2s, 40–80-word direct answers, definition-list structure, comparison tables, and clean ordered/unordered lists. We audit your top 50 pages for answer-format density and flag the high-traffic templates that need rewrites first.
08
AI engines weight citations from outlets with editorial track records. We audit your earned-media footprint, expert quote placements, podcast appearances, and link sources to see whether the engines have a corroborating-source trail for the claims your site makes about you.
09
Same prompt corpus run against your 3–5 closest competitors. Who's cited most in awareness prompts? Whose product gets recommended in transactional prompts? Whose name appears in 'best [category]' lists? You can't fix what you can't see — and competitive AI visibility is the most under-measured metric in SEO right now.
