Browsing on vs browsing off
ChatGPT answers prompts in two distinct modes. Web-grounded mode kicks in when a prompt is fresh, comparative, or shopping-flavored — ChatGPT Search dispatches OAI-SearchBot to retrieve pages and ChatGPT cites them inline. Training-data mode handles brand-recall, “recommend me a…,” and broad-knowledge prompts from what GPT learned during the last training window via GPTBot. The two modes reward different work.

ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your brand cited inside ChatGPT's answer and shopping surfaces — ChatGPT Search (web-grounded answers), ChatGPT Shopping (the product carousel and Instant Checkout flow), Custom GPTs, and ChatGPT Agent (the agent mode that replaced Operator in July 2025 — now available to Pro, Plus, and Team users and able to complete purchases across the open web). It is not the same as ranking on Google, and it is not the same as the umbrella AI SEO methodology. ChatGPT has its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot), its own citation logic, and its own shopping ingestion pipeline through Merchant Center.
OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's live retrieval crawler — the one that fetches pages when ChatGPT Search needs to ground an answer. It is different from GPTBot (training-data scrape) and ChatGPT-User (user-initiated browse). Allow all three in robots.txt with explicit User-agent blocks; block them and you forfeit ChatGPT citations. Verify hits in server logs by user-agent string and by OpenAI's published IP ranges.
For web-grounded answers, ChatGPT ranks candidates by semantic relevance to the user's prompt, source authority signal (entity recognition, domain trust, schema clarity), recency (dated, recently-modified pages win), and fingerprint diversity (it avoids citing five paraphrases of the same source). It will not cite paywalled or auth-gated content it cannot read, and it heavily discounts pages that read as generic LLM output.
Plenty of prompts still resolve from training data alone — short factual queries, brand-recall questions, “recommend me a…” prompts on well-known categories. For those, your presence depends on how GPTBot saw you during the last training window: did your Organization schema, About page, named-author bios, and third-party mentions teach the model who you are? We test the split with prompt panels — running the same prompt with browsing off and on to see where you appear in each mode.
If you sell on Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated — no application or feed setup required. Other US merchants apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and submit a direct product feed (CSV, TSV, XML, or JSON, refreshes as often as every 15 minutes) with enable_search and optionally enable_checkout flags. ChatGPT Shopping also pulls signal from on-page Product, Offer, and AggregateRating schema. To rank well in the carousel you need accurate price and availability, a non-trivial review count with real AggregateRating, and clean image assets. International rollout is staged through 2026. Two distinct flows. Instant Checkout went GA in February 2026 for US ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users — Shopify and Etsy catalogs are auto-integrated, and other US merchants can apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and implement the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). ChatGPT Agent is the broader browse-and-act mode that absorbed the original Operator research preview when OpenAI sunset the standalone Operator product in July 2025; it's now built into ChatGPT for Pro, Plus, and Team users and can complete tasks (including purchases) on sites where Instant Checkout isn't wired up. To prepare today: make sure PDPs expose machine-readable price/availability/variants and that cart and checkout work without auth walls or interstitials, so ChatGPT Agent can navigate them. For most eCommerce brands, no — the carousel and citation surfaces drive more traffic than a custom GPT will. The exception is B2B and technical niches where a Custom GPT trained on your catalog, docs, or sizing data answers high-intent questions that ChatGPT would otherwise hand to a competitor. ChatGPT's persistent memory means a user who once asked about your category may get you surfaced again weeks later without re-querying. That makes first-mention quality matter — if ChatGPT learns you as “a Shopify store that sells X,” that framing sticks. Entity work (Organization schema, sameAs links, Wikidata where warranted) shapes the framing the model retains.

Training-data exposure (the prompts that don't trigger browsing) compounds over 6–12 months as GPT model refreshes pick up the new signal. ChatGPT Shopping placement depends mostly on feed and review quality and tends to move faster than search citations once the feed is clean.
