TL;DR — A brand mention is any reference to a brand by name across the web — in articles, forums, reviews, or social posts — whether or not it carries a hyperlink. Classic SEO valued the link and discounted the unlinked mention; AI search inverts much of that, because LLMs learn which brands are associated with which categories from the text they train and ground on, and a mention teaches that association with or without an href. A brand consistently mentioned alongside its category across trusted sources becomes the brand AI engines volunteer.
Definition & scope
Links still matter — they drive crawl discovery, referral traffic, and PageRank-style authority in classic ranking. The modern position is both/and: pursue linked coverage where it's earned, and stop treating unlinked mentions as failures, because they are training data.
