TL;DR — Core Web Vitals are Google's three field-measured user-experience metrics — Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability) — used as a page-experience signal in ranking. Each has a "good" threshold (LCP ≤ 2.5s, INP ≤ 200ms, CLS ≤ 0.1) that a page should meet at the 75th percentile of real-user visits, as reported in the Chrome UX Report. They are a modest ranking factor but a large conversion factor: the same slowness and jank that fail the thresholds also depress add-to-cart and checkout completion.
Definition & scope
The metrics are measured in the field, not just the lab — real Chrome users' experiences are what count. Lab tools (Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights) diagnose; field data (CrUX) is the scoreboard.
For eCommerce, the usual culprits are oversized hero media and third-party scripts (LCP), heavy main-thread JavaScript from apps and tag managers (INP), and late-loading banners or unsized images (CLS). Fixes are engineering work, which is why performance belongs inside the development scope, not bolted on after.
