TL;DR — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long it takes for a page's largest above-the-fold element — usually the hero image or headline block — to finish rendering, counted from when the user initiates the navigation. Google's "good" threshold is 2.5 seconds or less at the 75th percentile of real visits. LCP is the Core Web Vital that best approximates perceived load speed: until the largest element paints, the page feels like it hasn't loaded, whatever the network tab says.
Definition & scope
Typical LCP offenders on commerce sites: unoptimized hero images (wrong format, no priority hint, lazy-loaded above the fold), render-blocking CSS and fonts, slow server response (TTFB), and client-side rendering that delays the element's existence entirely.
The fix pattern is boring and effective: serve the LCP element early (preload/priority), small (modern formats, right dimensions), and from close by (CDN), on top of a fast first byte.
