TL;DR — An answer engine is a search surface that responds to a query with a directly synthesized answer — usually generated by an LLM and backed by cited sources — instead of a ranked list of links. ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews are all answer engines. The distinction matters commercially: on a classic search engine the goal is to rank; on an answer engine the goal is to be cited inside the answer itself, which is a different optimization problem with different levers.

Answer engines change the unit of competition. A classic SERP has ten organic positions; an AI answer typically cites three to eight sources and mentions one or two brands by name. Winning a citation therefore concentrates visibility far more than winning a ranking ever did — and losing one means being invisible in that answer entirely.
The optimization discipline built around answer engines is AEO. In practice it combines the classic SEO foundation (crawlability, structured data, authority) with answer-shaped content — pages whose first sentences can be quoted verbatim — and measurement via prompt-panel monitoring rather than rank tracking.
