TL;DR — OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's search crawler — the agent that builds and refreshes the index behind ChatGPT's search and shopping experiences, identified by the OAI-SearchBot user-agent string. It is one of three distinct OpenAI agents a site can allow or block independently in robots.txt: GPTBot collects training data for future models, ChatGPT-User fetches pages live when a user's request triggers browsing, and OAI-SearchBot populates the search index that grounded answers retrieve from. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes a site from ChatGPT's search citations without affecting training-data collection.
Definition & scope
The three-agent split matters operationally: a brand can opt out of model training (block GPTBot) while remaining fully citable in ChatGPT search (allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User) — or any other combination. Blanket "block the AI bots" robots.txt edits routinely destroy AI-search visibility by catching the wrong agent.
For commerce sites the priority is usually the inverse of the fear: allow the search and user-fetch agents so product pages are retrievable at answer time, and make the training decision separately as a policy question.
