TL;DR — Internal linking is the practice of linking between pages on the same site to distribute authority, signal which pages matter most, and give crawlers reliable paths to every URL worth indexing. Unlike backlinks, internal links are fully under the site's control, which makes them the cheapest large lever in technical SEO: anchor text tells engines what the target page is about, link placement signals importance, and link depth determines how much crawl attention a page receives. Orphan pages — reachable by no internal link — are effectively invisible.

Definition & scope

On catalogs, internal linking is mostly architectural: category-to-product paths, breadcrumbs, related-product modules, and editorial content linking into the commercial pages it supports. The pattern to avoid is the silo where blog content never links to the money pages, or navigation so flat that everything competes equally.

Internal links are also how content clusters function — supporting pages link up to the pillar and across to each other, making the topic's structure legible to engines and LLM retrieval alike.
