TL;DR - Query fan-out is the technique AI search systems use to answer a complex prompt: decompose it into multiple narrower sub-queries, run them in parallel, and synthesize one answer from all the retrieved results. Google's AI Mode and Deep Research do this explicitly; ChatGPT and Perplexity do it whenever a prompt spans several considerations. The optimization consequence is concrete: content is retrieved per sub-query, so a brand wins the synthesized answer by having citable coverage of the follow-up questions - pricing, comparisons, compatibility, how-to - not just the head term.
