TL;DR — Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating large numbers of landing pages from structured data and templates — one page per city, product spec, integration, or comparison — to cover query spaces too large to write by hand. Done well, each page is assembled from genuinely differentiated data (real inventory, real local facts, real spec differences) and earns its place in the index; done lazily, it collapses into doorway pages and scaled content abuse. The craft is in the data, not the template: the template is the same by definition, so the per-page value must come from what fills it.
Definition & scope
Healthy programmatic builds start from a data asset competitors don't have — a catalog's spec database, measured results, priced regional service data — and enforce quality gates: pages with insufficient unique data don't publish.
Canonical and indexation rules matter at this scale: near-duplicate permutations need consolidation, and the sitemap should list only pages meant to compete. The pattern powers many of the web's biggest SEO successes and many of its penalties; the difference is discipline.
