Client: Mac Me an Offer
Mac Me an Offer and Mac of All Trades are two halves of the same organization. However, Mac of All Trades was built on BigCommerce while the other was built on a WordPress site. The administrator wanted a solution built entirely on BigCommerce that offered his users the ability to generate an immediate quote from Mac Me an Offer for the used Apple products his customers wished to sell.
This is a workflow and consolidation problem, not a cosmetic one. The organization ran two storefronts on two different platforms, and the WordPress-based Mac Me an Offer side needed a specific capability: letting a customer enter details about used Apple hardware and instantly get a quote for selling it. Splitting the operation across BigCommerce and WordPress meant duplicated maintenance and an inconsistent experience, while the core need — instant, self-service quoting for used-device buyback — wasn’t something a standard storefront provides out of the box.
1Digital® built a new store for Mac Me an Offer on BigCommerce that was integrated with a custom app, also developed entirely by 1Digital®, that enabled users to generate a quote by entering information about their products, searching by serial number and more.
Consolidating onto one platform is the first half; building the capability the platform doesn’t natively offer is the second. The engagement moved Mac Me an Offer onto BigCommerce so both halves of the organization run on the same foundation, eliminating the split-platform overhead. The defining work, though, is the custom app: an instant-quote engine where a customer enters details about their used Apple products — including lookup by serial number — and receives a quote, all built specifically for this buyback workflow.
Custom application development on BigCommerce is how a business gets behavior tailored to its actual operation rather than forcing its workflow to fit generic ecommerce patterns. Here the app turns a manual, back-and-forth quoting process into a self-service flow that lives directly in the storefront — purpose-built, not adapted from a stock feature.
Operating across two platforms and handling quoting manually is the kind of friction businesses often tolerate because the “fix” seems large. Consolidating onto one platform and building the specific capability the workflow needs removes that friction permanently instead of managing it forever — which is what makes custom development worthwhile for an operation with a process the market’s off-the-shelf tools don’t serve.
Mac Me an Offer’s core function is buying used Apple hardware back from customers, and a self-service instant-quote flow — where someone enters device details, looks up by serial number, and receives a quote on the spot — is not a behavior any standard ecommerce platform ships with. It is a workflow specific to a buyback operation, which is precisely why it warranted a purpose-built application rather than an attempt to bend a stock feature into the role. Consolidating the operation from a split WordPress-and-BigCommerce setup onto a single BigCommerce foundation removed the duplicated maintenance and inconsistent experience that came from running two halves of one organization on two platforms; the custom app then supplied the capability the consolidated platform did not natively offer. Building the workflow the business actually runs on, instead of perpetually working around its absence, is what makes this kind of custom development pay back rather than merely cost.
