ShadesDaddy needed a more modern site design and an updated logo, along with the functionality that only a more powerful platform could provide. To get off of their Volusion store would require the movement of a huge amount of data.
ShadesDaddy is an established eyewear retailer with a deep catalog of designer sunglasses and prescription frames. Their constraints were layered: an aging design and brand identity, functional limits imposed by their existing platform, and — critically — a large, complex dataset on Volusion that any move would have to carry across intact. A big catalog with years of products, variants, and customer history makes a migration genuinely risky; data loss or breakage at that scale is a business problem, not just a technical one.
1Digital® handled a complex migration of a large amount of complex data and then designed and configured a brand new Shopify Plus store which included the functionality of a brand new, custom designed app to boost customer engagement and conversions.
A migration of this scale is, first, a data problem. The engagement centers on planning and executing the transfer of a large, complex Volusion dataset — products, variants, customers, order history — into Shopify Plus without loss or corruption, which requires mapping the old data model onto the new one and validating it rather than dumping and hoping. Only once that foundation is sound does the storefront work proceed: a modern redesign and refreshed brand identity, and configuration of Shopify Plus to unlock the functionality the previous platform could not provide.
Beyond the platform’s native capabilities, this engagement included building a custom app specifically to support customer engagement and conversion. Custom app development on Shopify Plus is how a retailer gets behavior the platform doesn’t offer out of the box, tailored to its catalog and audience rather than bolted on generically.
It is tempting to treat a redesign and a migration as separate projects, but for a large-catalog retailer they are inseparable: the move to a more capable platform is precisely what enables the new functionality, and the value of that functionality is zero if the catalog and customer data don’t survive the move intact. Handling the data migration and the Shopify Plus build as one coordinated engagement is what makes a “better store” achievable without risking the business’s existing assets.
For an eyewear retailer like ShadesDaddy, with a deep catalog of designer sunglasses and prescription frames, Shopify Plus was chosen for capability the previous Volusion store could not provide — but platform capability alone is a starting point, not the finish. The engagement also included a custom app built specifically to support customer engagement and conversion, which is how a retailer obtains behavior the platform does not offer natively, tailored to its own catalog and audience rather than approximated with a generic add-on. The defining technical risk in a project of this scale is the data: years of products, variants, and customer history have to be mapped from the old model into the new one and validated, not merely exported. Sequencing the work so the data foundation is proven sound before the storefront and custom app are layered on top is what lets an established retailer modernize aggressively without gambling its existing business.
