The concern is reasonable, despite the fact that Google is still overwhelmingly dominating organic search traffic. People are increasing their use of AI and AI agents and tools, and while it hasn’t revolutionized eCommerce – yet  – it could in the relatively near future. 

So eCommerce merchants justifiably want to know what they need to do to keep ahead of the curve. Here’s some intel that you might find helpful.

The long and short of how to keep ahead of the AI trend is to invest in eCommerce AI SEO services.

Fortunately, quality eCommerce SEO services are already doing what needs to be done to develop an “AI footprint” if you will. 

I’ve written about this before. SEO is more and more becoming less about a formulaic process and becoming indelibly, irremovably dependent on quality copy that generates authority and answers questions. 

Yes, keyword density is still a ranking signal, and no, you don’t want a website that’s slow to load. These things still technically affect the quality of a website and UX. But what’s really important is that you answer the questions users are searching. 

The manner in which users enter prompts into answer engines throws a bit of a wrench in keywords. For one thing, users tend to enter long-tail queries into AI models, whereas search engines tend to see a lot of traffic with short-tail keywords.

Another big difference between users’ interactions with answer engines and search engines is that sometimes the keyword is interrupted. This is one of the reasons that it is so important to build authority not just around specific keywords, but around keyword clusters and topical verticals. Doing so will not just build an organic footprint through search engines, but increase the likelihood of being picked up by answer engines. 

The bottom line, however, is that any SEO strategy that hinges mostly or entirely on high-quality, optimized content is the golden ticket for AI optimization as well.

So now let’s take a closer look at what’s needed to get featured as an output through an answer engine like ChatGPT.

Answer Engine Optimization: What It Takes to Show Up

Ultimately, what it takes to get featured through an AI model like ChatGPT is fundamentally the same thing as what it takes to get a web page to rank in Google through copy alone. 

All SEO best practices apply, and since ChatGPT can use the internet as a collective data set, if a website shows up in the search results, that’s a pretty good prerequisite to showing up as an output through the answer engine as well. 

The main thing to consider with AEO, or answer engine optimization, is that you want to focus on two things: long-tail queries and user intent. 

Unlike in SEO, where you want to capture a keyword or query literatim, with AEO, that is not necessary. These large language models are quite adroit as winnowing the wheat from the chaff and finding answers to user questions. If the keyword is in there, good – the model still needs to have something to draw from – but at the end of the day, it’s whether or not you answer the question that matters.

This brings up user intent. Provided you’re answering a question pertinent to a long-tail, even if in theory you don’t include exact matches of the keyword, you could still show up in an AI output. Naturally you will likely include relevant keywords somewhere, but the point is to answer the question, not to meet some arbitrary metric. 

The other thing to keep in mind with answer engines is that, like search engines, they are looking for information that hasn’t been told over 100 times. There’s nothing new under the sun, but at the same time, if you can find a new way to present “old” information, offer more than other sources are offering, or actually have some new experiential inputs, you have a better chance not just of showing up in search engines but in answer engines too.

The purpose of ChatGPT SEO services is to get a website, or a page on a website, a brand, or a specific product, to show up as an output to a ChatGPT prompt. 

For instance, a user might search for “the best boots for yard work,” and in that case, the goal of ChatGPT SEO would be either to get a brand or a specific pair of boots from a brand to show up in the output. 

Ultimately, many of the same things that get a page to show up in Google’s search results are the same factors that incur an output from ChatGPT. However, ChatGPT may also utilize other ranking signals, such as local profiles, social media presence or buzz, and customer testimonials or reviews that exist off of the domain in question, but which refer to it by name or link back to it. 

At the end of the day, however, there is a great deal of overlap with regular SEO and ChatGPT AI SEO services, and best practices.

Grok is X’s personal AI assistant or tool. That’s Twitter for those of you who (like me) have not yet adapted to the new name. Each AI model prefers data structured a little bit differently.
